C700 - Wireless Modular Test & Development Platform

The C700 system constitutes an architecture of the primary blocks building any radio system. Users build their systems on the C700 base unit which is responsible for synchronization, power management, data communication and mechanical fixation of other blocks. With a bus speed of 700mbps, communication takes place between modules and the base unit. Modules are divided in two categories:

Basic Modules

  • Synch module provides synchronization & timing information on the whole system.
  • Control modules provide controller or external communication to external host.
  • PLL modules provide highly stable RF local oscillator to other system modules.

Innovation Modules

  • VSM modules vector (digital) signal generator/transmitter.
  • VSD modules vector (digital) signal demodulator/receiver.
  • UDC modules front end with up/down conversion.

Modules are user accessible to allow easy debugging and to enable user insertion of hardware in the loop. Innovatiion modules are programmable to redefine its functionality and involve user code as a block in the system. In any configuration; C700 can be used as a standalone system(using integrated controller), driven by an external host or employed as a subsystem in more complex systems.

C700 as your own final product

The architecture of C700 and its modules were engineered to fulfill research needs alongside final product realization requirements. The system modules have high specifications and best in class components yet maintaining small form factor which qualifies the system to be a final standalone working product Physical & environmental conditions were thoroughly considered while designing the C700 to ensure highest performance for field applications. the C700 control layer is as separate layer that allows either autonomous operation with integrated mon-machine interface for standalone operation, or to control the system from an external local or remote host.

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Implementation and Test setup

Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) is an emerging cost-effective wireless technology that offers significant improvements to data throughput in a non-line-of-sight environment. Investigating properties of actual channels and determining optimal transmission schemes for MIMO has been the subject of research nowadays. One field of this activity concerns the development of suitable signal propagation models to predict MIMO performance under varying physical conditions. This task and a lot of others can be accomplished using what's called MIMO testbed.

In this setup, two C700 systems will be employed to build a 4x4 MIMO TX and RX stations with a 40 MHz real time bandwidth. Beside a lot of other applications, The C700 platform can be defined as a scalable MIMO system with a common clock and shared local oscillator to fulfill phase coherence requirements. The system can be configured to investigate the performance of MIMO algorithms and channel models and it is easily upgradeable to higher order of channels.

C700 Platform

A modular SDR (Software-Defined Radio) development and verification platform that allows system designers & researchers smoothly to build their own tailored prototypes or testbeds in a methodological way employing a variety of standardized modules that comprise the functionalities required to architect a real radio system ranging from very simple setup to the most complex requirements.

MIMO Channel Modeling

Modeling complex behavior of a physical MIMO channel can be described mathematically using mathematical computational languages & simulation as an accurate numerical environment. Still real measurements are required using a practical test hardware. This will be performed here using C700 platform that meets the complexity requirements of state-of-the-art MIMO algorithms.

As shown in figure 1, the key to MIMO channel modeling is obtaining the channel matrix where the transmitting and receiving frames including noise are described in terms of channel vectors.

In figure 2, C700 platform is structured in a 4x4 MIMO Transmitter and Receiver stations where IQ Samples are sent to VSM1(Vector Signal Modulator) modules , each module is configured with a unique scrambled Walsh code, and are all triggered to start at the same time(for synchronization). Modules are programmed to continuously repeat a certain frame.

At the Receiver side, the VSD2 (Vector Signal demodulator) modules receive a command to start sampling at the same time, and then samples are sent to the PC for processing and producing the channel matrix.
